BREATH-TAKING BILBAO

Bilbao may not compare to Costa del Sol, a typical tourist spot, but it holds its own charm and attractions in the history stored up in and around its area.
It is set on Nervión River as a seaport city close to Biscay Bay. The main attraction here has to be Casco Viejo or more commonly known as the city’s Old Quarter located at Nervión’s right bank where you will also find Santiago’s Gothic Church of the 14th century, an ornate Plaza Nueva and the magnificent Teatro Arriaga.

A typical quiet and charming town, Bilbao is full of activity in August when the Semana Grande is held, which is the city’s major yearly bullfighting event. The streets are filled with frolicking locals and tourists in open-air bars, dancing and drinking the whole night. It has been likened to Mardi Gras, matching the famous Fat Tuesday event for the level of partying.

Top Attractions
Bilbao has received a great deal of investment to make it one of Northern Spain’s top tourist destinations, and it has succeeded in this task with great attractions such as the Guggenheim Museum, Municipal Library, San Mamés stadium which can seat 40,000 fans and is home to many local football clubs, the Old Market and the Congresos de Musica center which holds spectacular musical concerts, performances and conferences. The Municipal Library is situated at an ancient historical building complete with a wide range of reading materials and temporary exhibits. The Old Market is located in an ancient laundry building, which is worthy of a visit.
Hotel Attractions
Good villa blanes hotel accommodations are abundant here in the city, such as the top quality and trendy Gran Hotel Silken Bilbao, which was designed by Javier Mariscal, a renowned artist. This hotel overlooks the impressive Guggenheim Museum’s steely structure, which is world renowned.
Another top quality hotel is the elegant Hotel Carlton that dates back to 1926 although it was first designed in 1919. This architectural delight displays grand interiors and a wide staircase with a beautifully domed ceiling that has inlaid stained-glass pieces. Its luxurious bedrooms are extremely spacious displaying either contemporary or classic designs.
The 5-star quality Arecilla Lopez de Haro hotel is beautiful as it is friendly; this hotel was where the famous artist, Frank Gehry, first drew his sketches of the Guggenheim Museum from a room which overlooked the grand museum. Hence its distinction has been that popular sight from the hotel rooms requested by distinguished visitors to Bilbao such as actresses Jane Fonda and Gwyneth Paltrow and the Dalai Lama.
